Our Three School Values

# We are Responsible

# We are Respectful

# We are Resilient

BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT - DONE DIFFERENTLY:

At Wondai, we believe in challenging the norms. We believe in thinking and behaving differently. The way we challenge those norms, think differently and behave differently is by providing students with simple processes that are locally designed, simple to use and user friendly. We call this process the 3R's (Regulate, Reset, Re-engage).

Have you ever wondered why schools teach children to read and write but expect them to behave?  We have, and at Wondai we believe that if we expect our children to take responsibility for their own behaviour and actions, then it is our responsibility to teach children how to do that.

Our locally designed and developed 3R's student engagement process (Regulate, Reset, Re-engage) underpins and supports our school values of:

# We are Responsible

# We are Respectful

# We are Resilient

The 3R process was developed to ensure our children are taught the necessary skills to allow them to take responsibility for their own behaviour. The teaching of the 3R process begins in Prep and continues throughout the entire school in every year level. The process is simple and is couched around the three main statements and actions of:

REGULATE:

Here the children are taught to “read the room", have a look at what everyone else is doing and modify their own behaviour to match the situation. Children are taught how to read the room and how to regulate their own behaviours. What regulation looks like, feels like, sounds like.

RE-SET:

Here children are taught how to “turn things around". How to modify their current behaviour after reading the room and replace the negative behaviour with a positive alternative. If students are unable to regulate their behaviour after a maximum of three reminders, they can be sent for an in-class or in-office reset. Teachers or leadership team then talk calmly with the child so they are able to recognise the negative behaviour to enact the third part of our 3R process – Re-engage. Students in the senior years can select a self-reset option.

RE-ENGAGE:

Here the children are taught to recognise their negative behaviours, modify those behaviours and select the appropriate behaviour so they are able to re-engage in the classroom and the learning process. The readiness to re-engage in the learning process is the responsibility of the student, our role is to provide the tools to allow them to make those decisions.

Aligned to the 3R process is the 3R Lesson Matrix. This matrix outlines 12 areas of lesson foci: (Handling Mistakes / Managing Conflict / Accepting Differences / Caring for Others / Caring for our Environment / Active Listening / Interacting with Technology / Managing Frustration / Solving Problems / Caring for Self / Repairing Relationships / Asking for Help.

Teachers use the matrix on an “as needs" basis. If the teacher recognises that an issue within the class is children not Asking for Help then they can delve into the matrix, select or modify a lesson within the matrix that addresses the topic and then deliver that lesson or group of lessons. This ensures our children are being taught the skills they need and are relevant to them at the time.

The development and implementation of the 3R process is an example of Wondai P-9 State School responding to a local problem with a local solution.
